The soul fills the body, as God fills the world. The soul bears the body,  as God bears the world. The soul outlasts the body, as God outlasts the world. The soul is one in the body, as God is  one in the world. The soul sees and is not seen, as God sees and is not seen. The soul is pure in the body, even as God is pure in the world.

On how much we care about our bodies and how much we care about our souls.

The Bible tells us: "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?" (Mark 8:36) That is how precious the human soul is. It is more precious than the whole earth with all its treasures and blessings. However, it’s frightening to think how little we understand our soul’s worth. From morning to night, we direct all our thoughts to the body, the housing for worms, this fallen coffin, and on God’s most precious and beloved creation, on His image of glory and majesty, we hardly spare one thought in a week. We spend the most flourishing years of our life in serving our body, and only the last minutes of our decrepit old age, toward eternal salvation. Daily, the body indulges itself with full cups and sumptuous dishes, as though at a rich man’s feast, while the soul barely gathers crumbs of God’s words on His doorstep. The insignificant body is washed, dressed, cleaned, adorned with all types of treasures from nature and the sciences, while the priceless soul, the bride of Jesus Christ, inheritor of Heaven, wanders with exhausted steps, donned in clothing of a poor wanderer that is without charity.

The body doesn’t tolerate one blemish on its face, any dirt on its hands, not one patch on its clothing, while the soul, from head to toe, covered with filth, that goes from one sinful quagmire to another, and its yearly confessional which is often hypocritical, only increases its patches rather than rejuvenating it. The body demands various forms of diversions and gratifications; it frequently ravages whole families, for its sake people sometimes are willing to exert all types of efforts while the soul - has barely one hour on Sundays to partake in the Divine Liturgy, scarcely minutes for morning and evening prayers, reluctantly collects a handful of copper coins for charity and when thinking about death, expresses its satisfaction with a cold sigh. For the sake of health and welfare of the body, the atmosphere and habitat is substituted, foremost and distant physicians are summoned, there is abstinence from food and drink, the most bitter medicines are consumed, the body is allowed to be burned and dissected, yet for the health of the soul, for the avoidance of temptations, for distancing away from sinful infection, they take not one step but remain in the same atmosphere, in the same iniquitous society, in the same corrupt house, not seeking any spiritual physician, or else selecting one that is unfamiliar and inexperienced, hiding from him that which is already known to Heaven and hell, and about which they themselves boast among their circles. When the body is dying, you hear lamentations and despair, but often no thought is given when the soul is dying from mortal sin.
Like Adam and Eve, we don’t know the value of our soul and give it away for a seemingly rich yield.
At least why don’t we cry like Adam and Eve? Unfortunately, in the main, our concerns are for acquiring earthly benefits and not Heavenly ones. We forget that earthly gains soon pass and cannot be retained, while Heavenly gains are eternal, endless and cannot be taken away. Most gracious Lord! Help us to despise everything transient and concern ourselves only with the needs to save our souls.

sunflower

Everyone is familiar with the sunflower. It always turns its yellow head towards the sun; it’s drawn towards it, and from this it has received its name.
But it happens that a sunflower ceases to turn towards the sun. Then people who are experienced in this matter say that it’s begun to spoil; a worm has appeared in it and it needs to be cut down quickly.
A soul that hungers for the statutes and the mercies of God is similar to a sunflower and strives for and reaches out for God.
If it ceases to seek Him, it perishes.

good works for your soul

Every day you provide your bodies with good to keep them from failing. In the same way your good works should be the daily nourishment of your hearts. Your bodies are fed with food and your
spirits with good works. You aren't to deny your soul, which is going to live forever, what you grant to your body, which is going to die.

souls- vulgar and great

What chiefly marks off the greatest souls from low-level vulgar ones, it seems to me, is that vulgar souls give themselves over to their passions and are happy or sad purely according to whether
what happens to them is agreeable or unpleasant;
whereas great souls reason so powerfully that—although they
too have passions, which are often more violent than
those of the vulgar—their reason remains in command
and brings it about that even afflictions serve them
and contribute to the perfect happiness that they can
enjoy ·not merely in the after-life but· already in this
life.
Here is how they do it. They bear in mind •that they are
immortal and capable of receiving very great contentment,
and on the other hand •that they are joined to mortal and
fragile bodies that are bound to perish in a few years; so
they do whatever they can to make fortune favourable in this
life, but they value this life so little from the perspective of
eternity that they give ·worldly· events no more consideration
than we give to events on the stage. Just as the sad stories
that we weep to see represented on a stage often entertain
us as much as happy ones, so the greatest souls get an
inner satisfaction from all the things that happen to them,
even the most distressing and unbearable. When they feel
pain in their bodies they try hard to put up with it, and
this show of their strength is agreeable to them. Seeing
a friend in some great trouble they feel compassion at the
friend’s ill fortune and do all they can to rescue him from it,
and they aren’t afraid of risking death if that is necessary
for this purpose. But the sadness that their compassion
brings doesn’t afflict them, because they are happy over the
testimony of their conscience, which tells them that they are
doing their duty, acting in a manner that is praiseworthy
and virtuous. In short, just as the greatest prosperity of
fortune never intoxicates them or makes them insolent, so
also the greatest adversities can’t defeat them or make them
so sad that the body to which they are joined falls ill.

Soul is a butterfly

we are too busy, too
encumbered, too much occupied, too active !
We read too much ! The one thing needful
is to throw off all one's load of cares, of
preoccupations, of pedantry, and to become
again young, simple, child-like, living happily
and gratefully in the present hour.
We must know how to put occupation aside,
which does not mean that we must be idle.
In an inaction which is meditative and
attentive, the wrinkles of the soul are
smoothed away, and the soul itself spreads.

unfolds, and springs afresh, and, like the
trodden grass of the roadside or the bruised
leaf of a plant, repairs its injuries, becomes
new, spontaneous, true, and original
. Reverie,
like the rain of night, restores colour
and force to thoughts which have been
blanched and wearied by the heat of the
day. With gentle fertilising power it
awakens within us a thousand sleeping
germs, and, as though in play, gathers
round us materials for the future, and
images for the use of talent. Revcric is the
Sunday of thought ; and who knows which
is the more important and fruitful for man,
the laborious tension of the week, or the
life-giving repose of the Sabbath ?

...It is like a bath which gives vigour and
suppleness to the whole being, to the mind
as to the body ; it is the sign and festival
of liberty, a joyous and wholesome banquet,
the banquet of the butterfly wandering
from flower to flower over the hills and
in the fields. And remember, the soul too
is a butterfly.

inner life of spirit

We must as frequently as possible remind ourselves
that our real life is not that external, material life, which
takes place here upon earth, in our sight, but the inner
life of our spirit, for which the visible life is only a
scaffolding necessary for the rearing of the building
of our spiritual growth. This scaffolding has in itself
but a temporary purpose, after the fulfilment of which
it is not good for anything and even becomes an
obstacle.
Seeing before himself the immense, towering, and firmly
clasped timbers, while the building barely rises above the
foundation, a man is inclined to make the mistake of
ascribing a greater significance to the scaffolding than to
the building which is going up and for the sake of which
this temporary scaffolding has been put up.
We must remind ourselves and one another that the
only meaning and significance of the scaffolding is the
possibility of rearing the building itself.

Living Gold

Let us consider a soul, not one that has appropriated the unreasoned desires and impulses of the bodily life, or any other such emotion and experience, but one that has cast all this aside, and as far as possible has no commerce with the bodily. Such a soul demonstrates that all evil is accretion, alien, and that in the purged soul the noble things are immanent, wisdom and all else that is good, as its native store.
If this is the soul once it has returned to its self, how deny that it is the nature we have identified with all the divine and eternal? Wisdom and authentic virtue are divine, and could not be found in the chattel mean and mortal: what possesses these must be divine by its very capacity of the divine, the token of kinship and of identical substance.
Hence, too, any one of us that exhibits these qualities will differ but little as far as soul is concerned from the Supernals; he will be less than they only to the extent in which the soul is, in him, associated with body.
This is so true that, if every human being were at that stage, or if a great number lived by a soul of that degree, no one would be so incredulous as to doubt that the soul in man is immortal. It is because we see everywhere the spoiled souls of the great mass that it becomes difficult to recognize their divinity and immortality.
To know the nature of a thing we must observe it in its unalloyed state, since any addition obscures the reality. Clear, then look: or, rather, let a man first purify himself and then observe: he will not doubt his immortality when he sees himself thus entered into the pure, the Intellectual. For, what he sees is an Intellectual-Principle looking on nothing of sense, nothing of this mortality, but by its own eternity having intellection of the eternal: he will see all things in this Intellectual substance, himself having become an Intellectual Kosmos and all lightsome, illuminated by the truth streaming from The Good, which radiates truth upon all that stands within that realm of the divine.
Thus he will often feel the beauty of that word “Farewell: I am to you an immortal God,” for he has ascended to the Supreme, and is all one strain to enter into likeness with it.
If the purification puts the human into knowledge of the highest, then, too, the science latent within becomes manifest, the only authentic knowing. For it is not by running hither and thither outside of itself that the soul understands morality and right conduct: it learns them of its own nature, in its contact with itself, in its intellectual grasp of itself, seeing deeply impressed upon it the images of its primal state; what was one mass of rust from long neglect it has restored to purity.
Imagine living gold: it files away all that is earthy about it, all that kept it in self-ignorance preventing it from knowing itself as gold; seen now unalloyed it is at once filled with admiration of its worth and knows that it has no need of any other glory than its own, triumphant if only it be allowed to remain purely to itself.

What is soul?

What is soul? (It is) being aware of
(the difference between) good and evil,
happiness with virtue and benevolence,
and weeping because of harm and loss.

Since the (quality of) inwardness is
the secret and essence of the soul,
whoever is more aware is more possessed of soul.

Awareness is (due to) the influence of the spirit:
whoever has more of this belongs to God.

Then said Jesus unto his disciples,
If any man will come after me,
let him deny himself,
and take up his cross,
and follow me.
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it:
and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
For what is a man profited,
if he shall gain the whole world,
 and lose his own soul?
or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Moving Water

When you do things from your soul, you feel a river
moving in you, a joy.

When actions come from another section, the feeling
disappears.

Don't let others lead you.

They may be blind or, worse, vultures.

Reach for the rope
of God.

And what is that? Putting aside self-will.
Because of willfulness
people sit in jail, the trapped bird's wings are tied,
fish sizzle in the skillet.
The anger of police is willfulness. You've seen a magistrate
inflict visible punishment. Now
see the invisible. If you could leave your selfishness, you
would see how you've
been torturing your soul.

We are born and live inside black water in a well.
How could we know what an open field of sunlight is?

Don't insist on going where
you think you want to go.

Ask the way to the spring.

Your living pieces will forma harmony.

There is a moving palace that floats in the air
with balconies and clear
water flowing through, infinity everywhere, yet contained
under a single tent.
